Practical indoor London plans for families: official age guidance, free versus paid activities, booking, buggy facilities, breaks and honest outdoor-transfer advice.
Choose one indoor base, not a museum marathon. These short family plans match play spaces to ages, leave room for food and toilets, and explain what still needs booking.
Official pages checked on 1 November 2026. This is an editorial research date, not a live ticket, opening or lift-status check. Recheck official notices before setting off. Age recommendations are not entry restrictions unless stated; plan lengths are our suggestions, not venue session times.
Short plans by age
Ages 0–3: a small play visit
About 1½ hours inside · Free general admission; food and travel extra.
15 minutes: arrive, park or settle the buggy, and find the toilets.
30 minutes: explore one play area together; follow the child's interest rather than all three galleries.
30 minutes: feed, change and take a seated break.
15 minutes: a final look if everyone is happy, then leave before overtiredness.
For babies, a feed and a short look may be enough. Skip the final stop if sleep or a quieter environment matters more.
About 2 hours inside · Free galleries with booked museum entry; food and travel extra.
20 minutes: entry, toilets and getting to The Garden.
35 minutes: water, construction, light or sound play in The Garden.
30 minutes: snack or picnic, toilet and spare-clothes break.
15 minutes: collect the buggy and move indoors to Pattern Pod.
20 minutes: patterns and exploration, or finish after the break instead.
If a gallery is busy or unavailable, shorten the visit to a free gallery that suits your child. Do not buy an extra experience simply to fill the plan.
About 2¾ hours inside · Paid Wonderlab tickets plus free museum admission; food and travel extra.
25 minutes: museum arrival, toilets and reaching the booked Wonderlab slot.
90 minutes: choose a few hands-on zones; a show is optional, subject to the day's programme.
30 minutes: lunch or picnic and a proper seated break.
20 minutes: one free gallery on the way out, only if energy allows.
Keep a no-extra-cost alternative: book museum entry only and choose a short free-gallery visit. Check age guidance rather than assuming younger siblings will enjoy the same paid experience.
About 2 hours inside · Adult admission is paid; book free child entry too.
20 minutes: entry, coats, buggy and toilets.
35 minutes: All Aboard for younger children; older children can look at transport objects with a supervising adult.
30 minutes: café or permitted picnic break, toilets and feeding.
25 minutes: choose a few vehicles or objects to look at together.
10 minutes: collect belongings and prepare for the outdoor approach home.
With one adult, keep the group together and alternate interests; do not split children between floors. If play is busy, shorten the visit rather than promising a turn at every activity.
Official age guidance: The Garden is designed for ages 3–6 (younger children welcome); Pattern Pod is for under-nines. Under-12s must be with an adult aged 18+.
Free or paid: Free general admission, The Garden and Pattern Pod. Wonderlab and other paid experiences are not included.
Booking: Pre-book a free museum admission ticket. These free galleries are not a substitute for that admission booking; check current gallery notices.
Buggies and changing: Buggies are welcome in most areas, not every gallery. Park empty pushchairs opposite The Garden in the Spare Room (£1 coin-return locks); Pattern Pod has nearby buggy parking. Bring a spare top or your own apron for water play.
Access and sensory needs: The museum lists lifts, accessible toilets, baby changing and a level-0 Changing Places toilet. Some gallery mezzanines have no step-free access; construction can affect routes and noise. Consult the current access page and sensory map for your needs.
Break time: Allow 25–30 minutes for a snack, toilets and changing. Use a designated picnic area or café; the level −1 Family Room offers a place for a quieter break. Seating and quietness are not guaranteed.
Transfers and outdoor exposure: Keep The Garden and Pattern Pod as indoor stops within one building: no inter-venue outdoor transfer. Allow 10–15 minutes between galleries for lifts, toilets and buggy collection. Station approaches and entry queues can still be wet.
Official age guidance: Official recommendation: ages 7–14. Younger visitors are welcome, but this is not an early-years play space. Under-12s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18+.
Free or paid: A separate paid experience, not part of free museum admission. Day-pass prices vary by date; ages 3 and under go free. Check the official price for every adult and child in your party.
Booking: Book museum admission and a separate Wonderlab timeslot before arrival. Annual-pass holders also need both bookings. Do not assume walk-up tickets are available.
Buggies and changing: Pushchairs can be parked inside Wonderlab while you visit. The gallery lists toilets and seating; collect your buggy when leaving.
Access and sensory needs: Access information warns that shows may include sudden loud noises and some exhibits use magnets that can affect medical devices. Check the official exhibit warnings and speak to the venue about specific needs; do not assume every exhibit is suitable.
Break time: Plan 30 minutes for food and toilets, using the level-3 picnic area outside Wonderlab or a museum café. Check the ticket terms with staff before leaving if you want to return to the gallery.
Transfers and outdoor exposure: Keep this a single-building visit: no outdoor transfer between Wonderlab and the free galleries. Allow 10–15 minutes inside for moving floors and reaching the booked entrance; leave additional time for arrival queues.
Official age guidance: A museum designed for children from birth to 14. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Choose play, storytelling or design according to your child's interests, not an expectation of a scheduled workshop.
Free or paid: Free general admission. Temporary exhibitions and some events can cost extra; they are not necessary for this short plan.
Booking: No booking required for general admission. Check and book any exhibition or special activity separately; free entry does not mean a queue-free visit.
Buggies and changing: Buggy parking is near the entrance; the visiting FAQ says you can also keep your buggy with you. Baby changing is on the lower ground floor.
Access and sensory needs: The museum lists a step-free entrance, lifts, accessible toilets and an assisted accessible toilet with a paediatric changing table and hoist. Ask staff about access to that facility. The Community Room can offer a sensory break, subject to use.
Break time: Allow 25–30 minutes for café food or a snack and toilets. Ask staff where food may be eaten and whether the Community Room is available; do not rely on finding a free lunch table.
Transfers and outdoor exposure: The venue gives a 2-minute walk from Bethnal Green Underground; budget 5–10 minutes with children, crossings and rain. This is not a step-free Tube route. The venue lists Whitechapel as the nearest step-free station, an 18-minute walk: allow longer with children or plan a suitable bus approach.
Official age guidance: All Aboard is aimed at ages 0–7, with a Baby DLR area for infants. Older siblings can explore the transport collection instead. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Free or paid: Children aged 17 and under enter free; adults normally need a paid Annual Pass, even for one visit. Check pass conditions and current prices rather than treating 'kids go free' as a free family outing.
Booking: Book a timed museum entry and include free child tickets. Existing pass holders still need timed entry. All Aboard itself is drop-in with no separate playzone booking; this does not guarantee immediate space.
Buggies and changing: The museum lists buggy access and a buggy park opposite the cloakroom. Baby changing and a feeding room are on the ground floor; check current temporary toilet arrangements during refurbishment.
Access and sensory needs: Official facilities and accessibility pages carry differing lift-outage notices at this check. Confirm the lift route you need directly before travel. The Covent Garden Piazza is cobbled, with a level path only part of the way around; vehicle interiors may present separate access limits.
Break time: Allow 30 minutes for food, toilets and regrouping. The café is an option; the facilities page limits picnics in the Lower Deck area to weekends and school holidays, while the FAQ is broader. Confirm the day's picnic arrangements rather than assuming packed-lunch seating.
Transfers and outdoor exposure: Choose the museum alone, not a wet West End circuit. Its access guide lists Tottenham Court Road as the nearest step-free station, 10–15 minutes away on foot: budget 20–25 minutes with children in rain. Covent Garden station's lifts do not make it a step-free route.
These are alternatives in different neighbourhoods, not a route between all three museums. In persistent rain, stay at one venue and keep the break indoors.
Only if everyone still has energy: allow roughly 5–10 minutes outside from the Science Museum to a nearby South Kensington museum entrance, plus any queue and security time. This is an editorial estimate, not a covered or step-free transfer guarantee; book the second museum separately if required.
Approach times exclude service disruption and entry queues. Check TfL's live lift and station information, the venue's entrance notices and your actual route. A museum lift and a station lift do not establish an end-to-end accessible journey.
Pack rain layers, snacks subject to venue rules, a refillable water bottle and spare clothes for water play. Leave 15–30 extra minutes outside the suggested indoor plan for an unpredictable arrival queue.
Young V&A general admission and the Science Museum's general admission, The Garden and Pattern Pod are free. The Science Museum still needs a free admission booking. Wonderlab costs extra; London Transport Museum normally charges adults even though children enter free.
Can we take a buggy and rely on lifts?
All three museums publish buggy facilities, but some play galleries require parking. Check the individual venue notes and current access notices. London Transport Museum's official pages had conflicting lift notices when checked; no lift or full-route access is guaranteed by this guide.
Are these timed sessions or confirmed tickets?
No. These are short editorial plans with breaks built in. The booking links are official information, not live availability. Book the required admission and paid activity tickets, and check gallery closures before travelling.
Should we visit two museums in one rainy day?
Usually not with young children. A single 90-minute to three-hour base with a food and toilet break is more manageable. Even neighbouring South Kensington museums require an outdoor transfer, separate entry checks and possibly separate bookings.
